How Your Fear Of Change Is Keeping You From The Life, You're Meant To Live

fear of change

Change is a constant.  It will never stop. If you want to follow your dreams, you will need to overcome your fear of change.

Inner Critic

Often it is the voice of the inner critic that gets you in trouble. The inner critic is that part of your ego that wants to keep you safe by keeping to what it knows.

Your inner critic was necessary for your survival when you were an infant and child. However, it becomes a problem when you reach adulthood if you are not aware of how this negative voice impacts you.

You can tell your inner critic is speaking by its tone. It is loud, impatient, angry, and volatile. With time you will notice when it is present.

Your inner critic has good intentions. It wants to keep you safe. It will use your fear of change against you.

Unfortunately, unless you intervene, it will be exceedingly difficult for you to try anything new because your inner critic does not want you to overcome your fear of change.

If you have lived with this voice all your life, you are probably used to its tone.  It seems normal and, in some strange way, comforting.  But this not the voice of your true self.  It has probably been hurting you for years to keep you from following your dreams.

The voice of your true self is gentle, quiet, loving,  patient, inviting and kind. Over time, you will learn to notice the difference between your inner critic's voice and the voice of your true self.

Find Freedom Through the Enneagram

With the help of the Enneagram, you can learn to notice when your inner critic is speaking. With practice, you will befriend this part of you by reassuring this voice that you are now an adult and can take good care of yourself.

The Enneagram can help you to get connected with your three centers of intelligence your body (sensations), your heart (emotions) and your mind (quiet and open).  When you connect to your inner wisdom, you will connect to your true self's voice.  You will know what you need to do in each moment.

What do you want in your life?

What are your dreams?  If you could do anything, you want what would that be.

If you are having trouble discerning what this is, you might want to consider working with a coach such as myself. Life Coaches are trained to help you to discover the truth that is already within you.

Take a moment to brainstorm what you are feeling called to live out.  Then break it down into small steps. Remember, your inner critic will try to take over because you are moving into uncharted territory.  It wants you to keep you in fear of change.

Connect with Your Centers of Intelligence

During this time, you will need to find practices to help you stay physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy.  For example, you might try meditation. There are great apps available, and you might find a meditation group in your community.

You can try yoga, walking, working out, getting a massage to connect with your body's sensations.

To get in touch with your heart, you might like to keep a journal where you can keep track of your emotions. If you want a list of emotions to help you name them, you can email me at rolandlegge@relconsultants.com.  I am happy to send you a copy via email.

To quiet your mind, you can meditate. There are so many ways to meditate. Keep trying different forms of meditation until you find what works for you.  My favourite meditation app is called Insight Timer. Insight Timer is available for both IOS and Android devices.

Get the Help and Support You Need

Once you decide the direction, you want to go. Find a friend, family member or professional to help you move in the direction you want to move. Instead of taking big steps, I encourage you to break it down into many small chunks.  Reward yourself whenever you complete a step.

Your inner critic will try to stop you.  Once you recognize that your inner critic is active, speak to it to halt its negativity.  Let it know how it can help you to reach your goals.  If you give it something positive to do, it is likely to stay quieter.

Your inner critic will quiet down when you can bring your authentic self online. The more you honour and care for yourself, the more active your inner wisdom will reveal itself.  The good news is that you will begin to lose your fear of change.

One simple thing you can do whenever you notice your inner critic is taking over is to take a few deep breaths. Breathe from your belly. Focus on your diaphragm to breathe rather than your lungs. You want long slow deep breaths.  Whenever you do this, it will help you to get grounded and present.
